3 Tips & Tricks from Our "Pod-preneur" Panelists

I had a blast moderating our “Pod-Preneur” panel for last week’s Jersey City Tech Meetup event! A big thanks to AndCo for hosting our panel for one of my favorite meetups yet. We brought together an eclectic mix of local podcasters and audio experts to cover the tech behind the mic of podcasting, how to start your own podcast as a budding entrepreneur, the future of the industry and more. It was a super insightful night for myself and the engaged audience who certainly added to the excitement with their thoughtful questions.

Once again, none of this would be possible without our incredible community, contributing speakers and venues who host these events every month. Our panelists included Corey McLemore (Cambridge) of the Silent Giants podcast, Brian Weber of the Lit Up Podcast, Justyn Cruz of Cruz CTRL Music, Julia Porpora of the Neighborhood Jules podcast, Keith McPherson of the George’s Box podcast, and Shannon Ambrosio of the Everything N’ Nothin podcast and former host of the Cooking Channel’s Big Bad BBQ Brawl. A HUGE thank you to all these speakers for making big things happening in the community and for taking the time to share their wisdom with us.

My 3 key takeaway from the night:

  1. If you want to start your own podcast, don’t attempt to imitate what’s already out there. The world already has a George’s Box podcast, Neighborhood Jules podcast, etc. You must find your own voice and brand, and make something that the podcast world is lacking!
  2. Don’t worry about fancy equipment when getting started. Get the ball rolling with whatever equipment you have (even if that’s Voice Notes on your phone) and fine tune your process/technology as you progress with your podcast. You will learn as you get a few podcasts under your belt, so don’t worry about making it perfect before you launch.
  3. Only bring on guests that you feel a genuine vibe and flow with. Avoid guests who are too “pitch-y” for their product. Instead, look for a real authentic conversation and the rest will fall into place.

Thanks again to our Jersey City Tech community for continuing to come out and support every single month. We couldn’t do this without you!
